William Charles Lester Graham - Information
William Charles Lester Graham was born in Campbelltown in 1887. When the war commenced, he was living on Tulip St in Chatswood with his family and working as a carpenterâs labourer. At the age of 27, William enlisted in Liverpool on the 11th of April 1915. He was posted as a Private to the 6th Reinforcements, 1st Battalion.
Williamâs unit left Sydney Harbour on the 16th of June 1915, aboard the HMAT Karoola. He landed in Egypt and was then shipped to the front lines at Gallipoli on the 6th of August. Just less than a month after arriving, William was wounded in action on the 4th of September. He was injured from a bomb explosion that shattered the fibula in his leg. Whilst he was being transported to Egypt on the Hospital Ship Salta, his leg, sadly, had to be amputated. Unfortunately, William then died from his wounds on the 9th of September 1915. He was buried at Chatby Military and War Memorial Cemetery in Alexandria, Egypt.
