Sherman David O'Rourke was born in Appin on the 25th of March 1889. The O'Rourke family eventually moved to Brisbane. When the war began, Sherman was living on Gertrude St, in South Brisbane with his family and working as a driver. At the age of 29, he travelled to Sydney to enlist in the AIF on the 25th of June 1918. Sherman was made a Trooper with the Light Horse in Holsworthy in late July. He then embarked Sydney on the Port Darwin on the 14th of September 1918.
Sherman arrived at Suez in mid October, and was marched out to Moascar Camp. During his time in Moascar, the war ended on the 11th of November. The following month, Sherman was allotted to the 2nd Machine Gun Squad. In early 1919, he was admitted to hospital in Abbassia with bronchitis. Afterwards, he began his journey home to Australia from Suez on the HT Karoa on the 8th of April and was discharged from the military in May.
