Robert Bruce Campbell - Information

Robert was born in Camden on the 15th of September 1889 to Robert Bruce and Lucy Elizabeth Campbell. When Robert was older, he began working as a motor mechanic and driver. Sadly, Robert’s young bride then passed away. Although permanently residing in Elderslie with his parents, he was briefly working and living in Darlinghurst when he sent in an application form to join the AIF. He then signed on in Sydney on the 15th of May 1918, aged 28. Commencing his training as a Private in Liverpool, he was then transferred to the Australian Flying Corps as a mechanic in June. A few days later, he was appointed 2nd Class Air Mechanic. Robert remained in Australia working on aeroplanes. He was discharged from military service on the 19th of April 1919, and returned to Elderslie.
