Raymond Victor Cranfield - Information
Raymond was a son of John and Emma Cranfield, born in Camden on the 19th of August 1888. The Cranfields were part of a large family from Camden. When he was older, he decided to join the Navy, signing on for a hitch in 1912. Raymond trained at the London Depot from October 1912 until January 1913, becoming a stoker. Here, he also became qualified to take charge of other stokers while vessels were steaming. He was then posted to the HMAS Melbourne. On the 11th of December 1913, Raymond was promoted to Petty Officer. After the war began, Raymond and his fellow sailors were put to work, patrolling the high seas. At the end of 1916, he served on the HMAS Pioneer. He also served on the Warrego and the Penguin.
