Marcus Cook - Information

When Marcus approached the recruiting officer in Sydney, he lied about his age, claiming he was over 18, when in fact he was just 14 years old. He hastily filled in the paperwork at the Central Enlisting Depot in Sydney on the 20th of August 1918, stating he was born in Picton on the 1st of March 1900. At the time, he was residing on Pitt St in Springwood and working as a clerk. A week later, the army wrote his mother, Edith, for permission to send him overseas. She replied no, confessing that Marcus was only 14. She apologised for any trouble he had caused, and went on to explain that he would be quite capable to perform war duties on the home front. Marcus was subsequently discharged and returned home.
