Leslie Livingstone Griffiths - Information
Leslie was born in Picton and later resided at 2a James St in Redfern with his family. He served 3 years in the Senior Cadets and worked in a factory making cardboard boxes. Leslie watched eagerly as many of his friends left Sydney for war service. Claiming he was 18, he enlisted in Liverpool on the 29th of December 1915, and was subsequently made a Private with the 13th Battalion. Leslie then went absent without leave at Camp between the 29-30th of January 1916. He was sent overseas from Sydney on the 31st of March onboard the Star of Victoria.
Leslie disembarked in Egypt, and in early June was transported to the Western Front in France. Shortly after he arrived, he was admitted to the 26th General Hospital in Etaples with venereal disease. Here, he had an epileptic fit. The following day, he was evacuated to England to the Middlesex War Hospital. By July, he was at the 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital in Harefield, before being invalided back to Australia at the end of August 1916.
