John Butler Allen - Information
John Butler was the eldest son of John and Hannah Allen. John was born in Bringelly on the 19th of November 1891. The Allens moved about a bit, living in Campbelltown and Leumeah. However when John’s father passed away in 1901, Hannah moved the family back to Bringelly. She eventually remarried a Mr Jones. When John was older, he began working as a labourer before deciding to enlist in the AIF. He joined up at Warwick Farm Depot on the 29th of August 1915, aged 23. He was posted as a Trooper to the Light Horse and commenced his training. However, John began to feel very ill, and he soon reported sick, admitted to the Liverpool Camp Field Hospital. Here, he was diagnosed with spiral meningitis on the 9th of October 1915 and died from the infection 12 hours later. His family buried him at St James Anglican Cemetery in Rossmore. As little compensation, a pension was granted to his brother Sydney Lewis Allen and his step-sister Laura Margaret Emma Jones.
