Herbert Thomas Cotterill was born in Campbelltown on the 11th of May 1899, after the family moved to the area in the 1890s. When war commenced, Herbert was living with his mother in Guilford and was working as a sheet metal worker.
At the age of 19, Herbert enlisted in the AIF at Glebe on the 20th of September 1918. However, while Herbert underwent his physical, the doctors noticed that he had a deformity on his back from a spinal curvature. Herbert was declared unfit for duty and was thanked for volunteering.
