George Wassell - Information
George was born in Dulwich Hill, Sydney on the 1st of January 1896 to John and Louisa Wassell. In the 1900s, the Wassells relocated to Eagleview Rd in Minto. Here, George found work as a labourer. At the age of 22, George decided to do his bit. He signed up to the AIF in Sydney on the 17th of July 1918. Training at the M & D Depot in Liverpool, he was posted as a Private to the 19th NSW Reinforcements, and was shipped out for war. He embarked Sydney on the 4th of September 1918 upon the HMAT Bakara.
Suffering with sea sicknesses while onboard, George received another surprise. The war ended three days before the ship made berth in London on the 14th of November. Nevertheless, he was marched out to the 5th Training Battalion where he was allotted to the 4th Battalion. In late January 1919, he was taken to France, joining the Australian Staging Camp in Abancourt on the 31st. Here, he was detached to the Army Service Corps, Butcheries and Bakeries Section. George then departed England for Australia on the 2nd of August onboard the HMAT Argyllshire. He returned to his family in Minto. George passed away in Marrickville on the 15th of April 1955, aged 59.
