George Courtney William Ekin - Information
When George decided to enlist in the AIF, he was living in Mundra in Dulwich Hill with his family. He was born in Picton, and later joined the Senior Cadets while finding work as a grazier. When he was 19 years old, he enlisted at the Victoria Barracks on the 14th of October 1915. During training, George was made a Gunner with the 12th Reinforcements, 1st Divisional Ammunition Column. He embarked Melbourne on the HMAT Barambah on the 10th of December 1915.
George landed in Egypt in January, where he joined No. 1 Section, DAC. In mid May, he was transferred to the 21st Field Artillery Brigade. George and his unit provided vital fire support for operations. In January 1917, he was taken on strength to the 1st Field Artillery Brigade. George proved to be an effective Gunner and on the 19th of October, was appointed Acting Bombardier. He was then promoted Bombardier in July 1918, and appointed Sergeant in October. He finished his tour of duty, leaving for Australia in June 1919.
