Cecil Bruce Hughes was born in Campbelltown on the 11th of October 1895. During the war years, Cecil was living in Corrimal and working as a wheeler. At the age of 22, Cecil signed up in Wollongong on the 30th of April 1918. However, his enlistment was later cancelled when it was discovered that he had a problem with his right knee due to an old injury. He was declared medically unfit for active duty and discharged. This did not deter Cecil. A few months later, he tried again enlisting on the 1st of September. However, his knee injury was again brought to light, and his enlistment was cancelled.
