Alfred Beale Barter - Information
Alfred was a member of the Barter family who resided on Bristol Rd in Hurstville. Born in Camden c1879, he later found work as a baker. When he was 36 years old, Alfred enlisted in the AIF at the Royal Showground Camp in Sydney on the 8th of May 1916. Due to his work experience, Alfred was designated to the 27th Army Service Company with the 3rd Field Bakery Reinforcements. He left Sydney onboard the HMAT Demosthenes on the 18th of May 1916.
Alfred stepped off the ship in England, where he provided meals for the troops in Camp. In November, he then proceeded overseas to France via Southampton. The Bakery Units were a welcomed sight for tired and cold soldiers on the Western Front. After the war ended, Alfred was stationed back in England, as the remaining troops still needed to be fed. He then boarded the Borda on the 11th of May 1919 for his journey back to Australia.
